What’s the best PL gear to wear when watching from the couch?

On any given Saturday, the fine folks at NBCSN share endless pictures of Premier League fans in pubs at godawful times of the morning, celebrating their team by (sometimes) violating local liquor laws dressed in their favorite kit top.

But for most of us — especially those who contribute to their ratings — we’re plunked on the couch, coffee in hand, delaying weekend chores by hanging on through the 10AM ET match window. Or dressing up a pet.

Wearing your kit top to the pub like you’re headed to the match is just fine. There’s no chance I’m watching a match on less than one cup of coffee from the couch in a kit top.

The one essential item

So, what’s your average couch dweller to wear while watching? My suggestion: the kit bottoms.

Those replica match shorts are a thing of wonder. Rep your favorite team. In a very comfortable piece of clothing.

For me, the Saturday morning match buffet isn’t limited to just following my teams. I love to see what’s happening around the grounds. So, my personal goal is a little broader — to snag the home team’s match shorts from every PL ground I get to. Because they’re so small and lightweight, they make for the perfect takeaway item when I don’t want to drag around a bunch of merch (or wouldn’t wear any of it anyway :-).

For watching, not working out

The inspiration for my own search for shorts is the amazing SI writer Grant Wahl, who mentioned on his podcast (don’t remember which one) that he’ll do the same as he visits a given ground. He said they were great as a go-to workout short.

Grant’s use case deserves a slow clap for his simple ability and confidence to work out in something so slight and flimsy. There’s a reason this particular piece of clothing is designed for some of the most athletic people on the planet.

For me — and other couch dwellers, I’m sure — it’s best that we don’t leave the house with them on. And that’s why they’re perfect for a Saturday or Sunday watching from the couch.

Watch out for spring sales

And maybe the best news? The idea of an adult-sized human in a full PL replica kit is insane. (we know it’s only OK for kids up to .. 8 maybe?) But, the manufacturers have to make them (I guess?)

So when it hits the springtime, and the clubs are clearing out kit inventory, you’re likely to find the size and color you want for your favorite team on sale.

And until the club shops start stocking kit top replica bathrobes and slippers targeted to their US supporter base, this would be my pick for proper match watching attire.
